Thanks for the update. I believe the SLM locomotives were priced at $1M+ in the 1990's and I doubt that's gone down any in the interim. Still, they claim favorable economics compared to diesels in Europe due to increased ridership compared to diesel powered trains and much lower operating costs than restored old steam locomotives.

BTW, DLM (SLM steam's successor) is now talking new steam for tourist service in the Netherlands:
