Your post takes me back over thirty years to one of my first steam train trips. 4501 running from Louisville to Huntingburg, Indiana and return. This is what I saw from the train:
Two lane (bi-directional) rural highway next to the tracks.Two lanes of railfan vehicles running with us in the same direction. The guy standing in the bed of a pickup, camera on a tripod firing away at fifty miles per hour. The guy standing on the passenger seat of a car body thru an early sun roof taking pictures. The guy leaning out the window firing away with both hands on his camera, oh did I mention he was the driver!
Unfortunately, the behavior is not new. The only amazing thing is that there are not more bodies lying around out there.
