Superheat:

This cut from 1917 is good.

[books.google.com]

If the boiler was "derated" the change back would be extensive and expensive. Need flue/tubesheets, manifold, piping, and elements.

Superheater flues are 4"to 6" dia. in most applications. They may be swedged down on the firebox end.

By the way, there is a boiler tube service center in Denver who is gearing up for CNC swedged tubes. They will be able to handle up to 6"x.500 wall. I have spoken with them and they are willing to service the "locomotive" industry. About 12~16 months out.
