Earl and Ed, I stand corrected on the Oahu Railway engines. In the pictures I have of #70, you cannot clearly see anything below the running boards on the firemans side, as all is in shadow, but it does look like they may have hung the air pump with its top and piping just above the running board,right behind the air tank with the rest of the pump hanging below. Obviously, that would be the way to do it if it was a visibility issue, where the pump sticking up would get in the way of the fireman's line of sight along the boiler. As you said, Earl, a lesson learned from the K-27's.
