I know the book and the picture you're talking about. I'm not sure, but I think the color was somehow tweaked in reproduction. I'm saying that 'cause all the color was terribly off in that photo. I remember seeing the locomotive back as far back as the early '60s, and never remember it in green.
I can't be %100 certain about this, but will attempt to find out....
