When I get back to the shop and can look up the proper answer, I'll give you the correct first name (which escapes me at this moment).
The Ridgeway (sp?) that the spark arrestor was named after was a Mechanical Officer for the C&S. The Patent drawing actually calls it a "Ridgeway Spark Arrestor".
The reasoning behind the invention of this type of spark arrestor (or so Bob Richardson used to claim) was because the City of Golden was threatening to sue the C&S for the fires that its Locomotives were starting.
But I'll bet you that Mike Trent has all ready answered your question more thoroughly than I (I haven't read his post yet). Mike's good that way.
