In this same vein. The Supt. that hired me told this story about a problem that happened at the roundhouse in San Bernardino years ago. He had taken his Business car to Winslow for some meeting of the Coast Lines Supts. and General Manager's staffs and was returning on probably train 7 (Fast Mail). He was handed up a message at Needles to the effect that a locomotive had found its way into the turntable pit at San Berdo and that the Barstow and Los Angeles Derricks had been dispatched. The San Berdo derrick was involved with a problem elsewhwere. As No.7 passed thru Cadiz, he was handed up a message that the L.A. Derrick was now also in the pit. It was also suggested that the San Berdo Derrick be called back from whereever it was. To which AKJ prepared a message for dispatch as No.7 went by Amboy(at that time an open station) to the effect that they were to keep their hands off the San Berdo. Derrick as there was no more room in the pit. (So help me, this is a true story) SoCalCond.
