ooh, a conspiracy theory! From all I've read, incompetence was to blame.
The guy told to watch #2 as it sat overnight at Vance Jct. wasn't properly trained, (actually he was a water-service guy) and let it sit too long without checking on it. Water got low and the inevitable resulted. What I've always wanted to know is why it wasn't rebuilt. The first reports on the incident seem to expect that it will be done and state that the Grande had offered to help*. but it never happened.

In answer to another question on this thread 02 was hauled back to Ridgway sometime after the summer of '51, presumably as part of the late fall clean-up that saw almost all the equipment moved to Durango or Ridgway. There is a picture of it at Ridgway on 9/15/52 on page 323 of vol XII of _The RGS Story_
