I am writing an article on the runaway of 492 in 1935 and I have a number of photos from 1929 to the 50s. Also have the equipment cards for the 490s. The card for 492 does not show the installation of a dual gauge coupler. There are a number of photos of 492 with dual gauge coupler pockets, but none showing a coupler at the standard gauge position.
The reason for having dual gauge couplers on the two 480s and 490s was so that they could switch standard gauge gons at the car dumper (barrel transfer). But by the late 30s, the lower track at the car dumper was standard gauge only, so the D&RGW apparently moved those cars with one of the standard gauge switchers based at Salida.
