Thor's numbers are probably real close...
I remember firing the trips to Silverton on the 470's...We'd start out with the tank full and coal piled as high as they could get
it to stay on there, and a few good sized lumps usually in the gangway right in front of the coal gates.
(One time the hogger told me not to worry too much about breaking up those big lumps...he said "just get 'em in there and I'll break 'em up for ya") I used to try and stuff them around in the back corners
when building up the fire just before Hermosa.
We'd use the coal up to the point where we had the upper gates and sometimes the lower gates open coming thru Hermosa where we had to fire a little on the way in.
Each water stop on the way up Tank Creek, Needleton, etc, took at least half a tank (about 2500 gallons), and we'd usually take water at Needleton on the way back to avoid running the tank dry coming in (I did that once when we ran the stop at Needleton...No water at Hermosa that day,but we had half a glass in the boiler when we turned the engine over to the hostler).
