I have the "Taking Stock" book and it has the D&RG blue prints for the various styles of stock cars. The 1903 55xx series drawing shows the rod in place. I also see what look like a couple of supports for the rod just under the end door or did the end door slide on the rod? Hmmm....

The 1926 drawing no longer shows the rod.

The rods must not have lasted long as it seems hard to find a photo of one. Note that the 59xx stock cars and the reefers have flat straps.
