D&RGW NG freight car question

While building models of D&RGW narrow gauge box cars, stock cars, and reefers, I attached corner bands at the top, bottom and center at each end of the car. Why is the band in the middle shaped the way it is? What is it's purpose (other than to help hold the side and end of the car together? Why the hole in the band? Why does it stick out past the side of the car? See the attached photo, where the part in question is colored in red.
