Thanks for the note. I've been at the Alcoa website, and ordered some propaganda.
As a very fortunate teen-ager who had talked his parents into taking him to ride the San Juan in its last year of operation, one of my fondest memories is of the attachment of the helper at Chama, and the subsequent dramatic climb to Cumbres. We had paid the little extra fare to ride the parlour car, so had a wonderful view from the rear end of the train.
Would it be a blast if new, luxury light-weight cars were so popular that helpers were required out of Chama, to accomodate the hordes on 28 car trains?
