Maybe the answer lies somewhere in the middle of all this discussion. Everyone makes some good points, and all seemed to be in the best interest of the railroad.
It might someday come to the point that there has to be some "Caving in" to preserve the "REAL" D&RGW railroad that we all want for hisotoric purposes. Perhaps in the future, as O.Anderson has suggested, we will need to have one train that is simply a Hot Tourist Trap Train, to cater to the throngs, which in turn will help keep alive the traditional experience of the Genuine Authentic train. Is this a bad thing....depends on your outlook. If it means survival its a good thing. If it means losing the historical aspects of the area, then its a bad thing.
I the leaders are on the right track with the new parlor cars. Its a first step in seeing just what the public will want, and what they will spend. If it takes a cruise train someday to preserve the line, then it beats the alternative I suppose!
As an example of two different points of view on tourists, I spoke to a lady who asked me if I was going to be staying in a condo when we take a vacation to the coast. She was shocked that we had to drive to the beach from our motel. I said I prefered the experience of a clean unpopulated beach with NO BUILDINGS anywhere, to the beach front resorts that gobble up all the useable land.
Two entirely different views, but where does the most money go! Food for thought!
