A story I heard about the 473 going into reverse at speed was toldto me by the engineer of record, Andy Payne. He was running an excrusion train west of Chama in the mid 1960s when the lever holding the reverser in place broke.
``I was going about 20 mph near Azeota,'' he said. ``Everyone who was sitting down was standing up and those standing up were on the floor.''
He said the Alamosa crew had problems with the engine and some welding had to be down in Chama. It was the weld that broke.
The power reversers had a habit of slipping dwon into the corner so the D&S crews decided to put the Johnson Bars back in.
