Nice photo (1984).
This photo has me wondering what I saw around 1989 or so when I was up in Silverton. A little north of town sort of by the park with the gazebo, I remember seeing a frame of what I thought, until seeing that 1984 photo, was the "Casey Jones". It sure was very similar with dual pilot axles and single trailing axle. But there was no back...the wooden cabin section. All that was sitting there was an old beat up looking frame and motor. At the time I guessed it was a goose like rail car used for the Silverton and Northern or other line, like Gladstone, but knew nothing else.
Then after seeing the current version come alive for a Railfest, I figured what I saw was a pre-rebuilt Casey Jones. But seeing that 1984 photo makes me think I saw something else. Or possibly the wooden cab was taken off for rebuilding when I saw the bare frame. But I'm not sure now.
On more recent trips to Silverton I have been unable to find the old frame. So that's why I thought what I saw was the Casey Jones. What could I have seen back in 1989? Was the "Casey Jones" rebuilt to run, or was it always more or less operational?
