The Casey Jones is in the DSNGRR museum for the winter. It belongs to the San Juan County Historical Society. It was given to them several years ago by Rod Turner, of Durango, whose father had acquired it as a swap.
I rode down in the track car we used to pull the Casey to Durango in Oct 2006. The car does run, and we've had it running in the roundhouse yards. The magneto is shot, so it needs to use a battery to run. It starts when 4 of the 8 primer cups are properly filled.
Although the SJCHS chair told me that we could run it during Railfest 2007, liability questions prevented any such use. It is not owned by the DSNGRR, so running on our track is a problem. The same sort of problem dogged the 315.
The SJHS is expecting to build a cover for the Casey and have it back in Silverton permanently. Sometime. Rod Turner was disappointed that in 2005 the Casey was on display down at the depot rather than at the SJHS museum in town. There is sure to be more played out.
