Something to remember when making assumptions based on photos: Compared to today there were very, very few photographers out and about taking photos of trains and usually they traveled in groups. This travelling was often in connection with a specific excursion or a railfan trip with a bunch of enthusiasts all hitting the scene at one time.
Because of this there are specific days in history when we have lots and lots of photos from lots and lots of photographers showing engine ### running on XYZ railroad out of Podunkville. This often leads the fan community to theorize that engine ###
always ran out of Podunkville on the XYZ railroad and
never ran on the ABC railroad. I did some research once on
Silver San Juan by Mal Ferrell. I found that of the 600 photos in the book, most of them were taken on eight specific days or narrow blocks of days in the life of the railroad! Not exactly a comprehensive history, based on photographic records.
We often forget that there are years, even decades, between gaggles of shots. The only thing we can say for sure is that on
this particular date in time engine ### was running out of Podunkville on the XYZ.
When I got the
Silver San Juan, I began to think that my old favorite, the 41, was never used. Then I realized that those eight clumps of photos were nearly all taken on the North end from Ridgway to Rico. All the other engines were in view so I
assume the 41 was holding down the South End! But only for those days!
So, of course the 462 was used by the Rio Grande. It just wasn't in use there when the photographers were around. When they were around it just happened to be leased to the RGS.
