Caboose bunks and seats

As we get ready to finish up 0579, we need to come up with cushions for the bunks and seats. What were these originally made out of ? The pictures I have appear to use leather over some kind of animal based padding (horse hair?). Most restorations I have seen used something synthetic over foam. Much more practical, but I realized this doesn't help anybody understand what these were originally like.
Anybody have any comments ? I doubt my daughter would appreicate me using horsehair from her horse.
