484 on the loop east of Sublette
From the next RR crossing we decided to try out the "shortcut" road to Antonito via the Los Pinos river road that passes the Lava pump house. Here 484 is passing on the sky line on the next big track loop
Arriving in Antonito, the first action was to retrieve my 1964 VW bug that had been resting quietly by the depot for the last three days, since I was travelling with John and Steve. We now had two vehicles to deal with, and we took turns: two people driving, the third riding on the roof rack of John's 4x4. So this picture was taken by me riding on the roof rack, and Steve driving the bug.
We had done some fabulous roof rack riding the day before, pacing the 492-498 double header on the Navajo reservoir relocation. Here is 492 racing along at a good 25-30 mph on the brand new track (best track on the narrow gauge).
Here is Steve taking a turn on the roof rack. This was well before seat belts or the "click-it-or-ticket" campaigns. I suppose today a state trooper would not look kindly on these antics.
