The trees at the Converse Basin in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California are the Sequoiadendron Giganteum (giant sequoia). These occur naturally only in separated groves on the western side of these mountains. Fossil specimens indicate that the trees were once elsewhere in North America and even in Europe. These are among the oldest living things and the largest trees by volume.
The Coast Redwoods, a species with more commercial value, is likewise also found naturally only in California. It is found along the Pacific coast from near the Oregon boarder to south of Monterey. Individual trees have been found 375' in height.
