Helpers from Alamosa would run light down the hill to Chama, and get placed in a pool that had them work in Chama a few days doing hill turns, then head back to Alamosa, either as a road engine on a freight or running light after helping a train up the hill. I don't recall how the rotation actually worked, but there was a system. Sometimes a crew stayed with the same engine, but most of the time they ended up running different engines on their days over in Chama.
