IIRC, the 'San Juan' – with the closed-vestibule passenger cars, a few of which are still in use on the D&S – ran from 1938 or '39 through January, 1951. I've seen photos of it crossing Lobato trestle, near Coxo crossing, and at Cumbres Pass with either a K-28 or a K-36 on the head end – so either class engine would be appropriate, and I for one was disappointed that the #476 for #483 swap didn't take place. SFAIK, the cars being restored to run with #168 are all of an appropriate somewhat older vintage.
