I read that it was UP's managements reason for a running gear inspection every 100 miles. If you had to grease the rods you might see something else wrong. Not all railroad management thought the same and it was determined later on the change to roller bearings was not worth the cost. I learned this again at the 1999 railfair with questions to the UP steam crew. Mktjames
