By August, 1981, things had settled down to a routine and I was taking less pics. In late August 488 was in the shop for her quarterly inspection. I see she was over the jack pads on the east track, making me thing we were doing some work in the front end spring rigging. The tender had been disconnected for inspection of the drawbars and pins. This allowed me to get some nice cab detail shots. Right in front of 488 you can see the newly constructed drop pit rails. It wasn't completely finished until fall.
Note the brake valves have been removed for cleaning...
