The 491 so far

November 12, 2016 09:27AM
This is what I know about the 491 saga. This is subject to correction and audit so if I get derailed somewhere down the track please chime in.
~ The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) finds that it no longer needs K-37 491.
~ The Colorado Historical Society, now called History Colorado, decides to have a railroad project which would rebuild the Georgetown Loop from near Georgetown to Silver Plume.
~ The D&RGW and the Colorado Historical Society work out a plan where the Society will acquire the now surplus 491.
~Lindsay Ashby, who operates the Georgetown Loop for the society said that the 491 would not be able to be operated on the loop. This is not a surprise as the 491 is larger than any locomotive the Colorado & Southern and its predecessor lines used on the Loop.
~ Since the 491 cannot operate on the loop it stays in Alamosa for the time being.
~The 491 is moved to the Colorado Railroad Museum (CRRM).
~The Society transfers ownership of the 491 to the CRRM.
~The museum staff return the 491 to service.

Since the 491 cannot run on the Georgetown Loop its sister engines can't run on it either for the same reasons.
Note: When the Colorado & Southern wanted extra locomotives for its South Park lines it wanted to lease some Mudhens (D&RGW 450-464). These engines, while smaller than the 491 were too large for the C&S narrow gauge track.
