That was my experience, too, Ted! Except I didn't get the book in my hands till later and reading it realized I had in fact walked through the world he described and met some of the people. One of the strangest things I've experienced, and made me respect McPhee in a way I can respect few authors,

An elderly friend once described meeting a great and true scholar to me; "It was as though I went in to a great library and the books came down off the shelf and opened themselves to me and started talking....." With McPhee it was as though he opened the people around me I was overlooking.
