#498, with #484 as her helper, pulled the last revenue loads eastbound over Cumbres on Thursday, August 29, 1968. #484 had pulled the last revenue loads westbound over Cumbres, with #483 as her helper, the previous day. Also on Thursday, August 29, #483 pulled the last westbound train from Chama to Durango, and on Saturday, August 31, #483 delivered those last loads to Farmington and returned to Durango with several empties - so the very last revenue freight on the Narrow Gauge (not counting an occasional carload or two on the Silverton branch) was pulled by #483, two days after #498's last run.

#498 was stored serviceable in Alamosa on 08/29/68, but has been sitting outside in Durango for the past 25 years - or more - and has been extensively cannibalized. Here's what she looked like in June, 2010, posing with D&S Museum Curator / artist Jeff Ellingson. At least the asbestos had long since been removed:

Unfortunately, you are probably correct - the C&TS has no need for another derelict K-37, and the 478 trade is unlikely to be revived . . .
