I have always loved the photography of John Krause. Even though he was from New York, he could capture Western steam like few others.
I am lucky to have quite a few of his negatives from both Eastern and Western loggers and also a nice set of his D&RGW negatives from the 1950's. His large format negatives print up beautifully.
Here is an example of his fine work. We see D&RGW #489 stopped for water at Gunnison, Colorado in May 1955 when Krause was out to shoot the Marshal Pass line while it was still narrow gauge. He really knew how to capture the scene of isolation through his camera lens.
