There was never “the mine” for gilsonite. It was mined from a series of parallel straight vertical veins that ran for miles NW from Dragon, UT. Several pictures in both Bender’s and Polley’s books show entrances to some of these veins. From the air you can follow these veins, and in some areas they appear so straight that you would think they were laid out by surveyors.
All the later hydraulic mining was, and is, conducted further North than the area served by the Uintah, and is still mined from the same type of vertical veins scattered over a wide area.
I have conducted many tours over the Uintah and am always amused when the participants see some of the grades and curves for the first time.
