The writer was well-meaning, but probably couldn't have used more terms to describe the builder as a nut and/or an overgrown child. Considering Ted Benson was involved, I'm surprised he didn't suggest a few different phrases. Building your own locomotive is not something the average golfer could do, yet the golfer is considered normal and the other guy an eccentric..
