The tank car traffic began the day they Narrowed Gauged the Farmington branch in 1923. One of the most valuable moves was the high rated through traffic from Farmington to Salt Lake City via Montrose via the RGS. When the Ames slide blocked the RGS, the railroad was forced to move the weekly traffic via Valley line and Marshall Pass must to their discuss and loss. They soon built the NG to SG transfer at Salida to replace Montrose.
Gasoline was shipped all over the narrow gauge and cars were even shipped to McPhee as purchased by the NML Co. and Montezuma Lumber Co. to feed the many logging trucks. One dealer at Silverton took delivery, I believe. PRR
