I have three different books that give three different Grant serial numbers, and even if you add the three numbers up, you don’t get a whole number.
It is a former narrow gauge loco, and it located at the Sanfilippo estate in Barrington, Illinois. It was built in 1881 as Texas & St. Louis RR 18, a narrow gauge loco. It was sold in 1886 to the Coeur d’Alene Ry. & Navigation Co., its No. 1. In 1898, it was sold to F. M. Hicks & Co. In 1902, it was sold to the Mason & Oceana RR, its 2nd No. 1. In 1910, it went to the Marshall Butters Lumber Co., which was owned by the same person as the M&O RR. The Stearns & Culver Lumber Co. took over the Marshall Butters Lumber Co. In 1923, the Ford Motor Co. took over the Stearns & Culver Lumber Co., and it is believed that Ford changed it to a standard gauge loco and changed its number to 5. In 1929, it was donated to the Edison Institute. In 1985, it was sold to Frank Coyne. In 1992, it was sold to Jasper Sanfilippo.
“Cotton Belt Locomotives” by Strapac (1977), page 225, lists its serial number as yet unknown. “Railroads Through the Coeur d’Alenes” by Wood (1983), page 187, says that it is Grant No. 1484. “The Steam Locomotive Directory of North America” by Conrad (1988), page 303, says that it is Grant No. “1489?” (question mark included in the Conrad entry). “Encyclopedia of Western Railroad History, Vol. 5” by Robertson (1991), page 206, says that it is Grant No. 1459.
Is there anything out there that resolves this disagreement as to the Grant serial number of this loco?
