October 13-14 was our last weekend of passenger service, and 1744's last weekend before going into winter hibernation.
A now-common sight of 1744 eastbound at the summit. Saturday's trip was rather routine.
On Sunday we had a visit from Steve Milward, part time fireman for the Yreka Western in northern CA. Here Steve takes a crack and keeping 1744 hot and full of water west of Sierra.
Up the west side of La Veta Pass one more time...
At Fir we paused to put up retainers before the 3% descent to La Veta. Storm clouds are starting to come in from the west...
A weathered and perhaps weary face awaits the last battle up La Veta Pass...
Making a run for the hill west from La Veta, the skies are looking threatening, rain is falling on the hill.
Rain begins to fall, 1744 fights to keep her feet on the slick rail.
Halfway up the hill the rain turns to snow. 1744 continues the fight to the top....
Yours truly has his hands full keeping 1744 on her feet and plugging away at the hill...
...While fireman John Charles keeps the water up and steam gauge right on 200lbs.
..The end is in sight as we approach Fir in a snowstorm.
At the summit of La Veta Pass at Fir, 1744 takes a breather before rolling down the west side.
Back in Alamosa, yours truly in front of a very tough old engine...
Fire out, stack capped, 1744 watches the Alamosa sunset.
