Remember, that track grease also extends rail wear life by a factor of 10 or more times, a major expense item for heavily curved railroads like the SL&RG. Also helps extend flange life of those expensive drivers.... the tendency for many railroads is to utilize too few lubricators and try and turn them up, which results in excess on top of the rail, which is the real problem. A few more applicator sites, each turned to a lower setting, would do wonders to help save the rail yet avoid that top of rail grease contamination. However, that would also cut down on some of that great stack talk!
