A steam locomotive is made up of many components that were furnished by firms other than the builder. Whistles, lubricators, gauges, air brake compressors, brake stands, injectors valves firebox doors, turbo generators,and a miriad of other parts were built by outside vendors. It has been said that the N&W would have used steam well into the 1960's and beyound if these suppliers were still making these components.
