The D-17000's were widely used during the late 1930's and 40's. I was told by an old time Cat. employee that it was not even a Cat engine originally. I have not been able to confirm that. They are easily air bound and often difficult to start from dead cold. We havent given up on our ex-Air Force #8580.
It still actually runs on one prime mover so itcan be moved when necessary. It may still be reurned to service at some point in time. Right now the diesel folks are working on an SW-1, SP 1006! I noticed the C&TSRR changed out their D-17000 sets in #19 to new CAT models! I amsure that was not cheap!!
