Pure speculation on my part, but I expect that the pilots on D&S's engines have fairly short life spans. One good sized rock laying between the rails, and the pilot will be heavily damaged, if not destroyed if they don't get stopped in time. Its quicker and easier to cannibalize a dead engine when a replacement is needed for tommorows train.
