I chuckled when I read Earl's rant and how he wanted to flog the guilty party. It caused me to wonder where I had heard the rumor of the Crownsheet. I hate to say it but I found it in an old edition of
Ticket to Toltec. I love Doris, but she must have recieved some bad info from someone along the way, as I'm sure she would not have made it up.
BTW I found it in the 7th printing of the book, 1986, pg. 66. It states, "All was not glamour for the 483, however, as she turned over in 1958, killing the fireman. The engine was idled in 1978, having suffered crownsheet damage."
I have an "83 edition which states if was idled due to bad boiler water during volunteer operations, and the 2001(?) edition correctly states the real problems.
