I was looking through the mudhens book and saw something actually attached to this bracket. If you look at the photos of 451 on pages 26 and 27 you will see a rod running from the bracket up to the back side of the pilot beam. Not sure what it is for, a little too flimsy for a brace. I would think it is related to the cylinder cocks somehow. If you look at the photo of 453 on page 42 the link between the cylinder cocks seems to protrude through the hole in the bracket.
