Bill, Howard Bunte is knowledgeable on the subject--I helped him put a new roof on the 0503 in the late 80's--canvas first and we used a new product called "indokril"(not sure of the spelling)--I still have "indokril" on my work bibs and it has survived many washings and to my knowledge the 0503 hasn't had to be redone since we applied the new roofing material. I do believe the canvas was applied right on top of the wood. I hope this helps.
