Hi John,
That photo was taken last Saturday at the Santa Margarita Ranch. Rob Rossi has offered to store the locomotive for SLORRM, of which he is a life member. Brad LaRose had just recently finished giving her a new coat of paint. Phil Reader and I applied the graphite on the smokebox and sidesheets.
The museum is considering re-gauging it to 3', like Henry Sorenson did with the Kiso No. 6, but it is an expensive proposition, and a decision remains to be seen. In any event, they would like to run it on what would be a dual (or triple?) gauge demonstration track next to the SLO freight house. However, being that their track is less than 30' (barely) from the UP main, the "Dagny" would fall under FRA mandate, thus requiring compliance to the 49 CFR Part 230, aka a Form 4 work-up.
Meanwhile, in Japan, it looks like the Kiso No. 3 was recently restored for a new forestry museum of sorts (Yahoo translations is only good for so much!). There is also a diesel tourist train running again out of Agematsu on the old line, and the No. 1 is still there as well. The Japanese seem to be quite proud of this little railway. Who knows, perhaps if all else fails they'd be interested in bringing another piece of it back.
