1924 to 1940 for the spelled out "Denver & Rio Grande Western." The Royal Gorge herald started showing up in the late 20's. It would appear that the 455 has aluminum lettering which tended to disappear with the pan film of the times. With the film in use during most of the late teens and twenties it was hard to see any lettering at all. It also appears that the boiler jacket itself is the only thing painted green. The cylinder covers (jackets?) appear to be black as do the center sections on the domes. The second shot posted below shows this clearly as well. It is, of course, an Otto Perry shot from the wonderful Western Collection of the Denver Public Library. According to the DPL, the date was September 1, 1930.

Great looking engine. Thanks for sharing.
