Hi,
I am hoping I do not open a can of worms again, but the Trains News wire reported
"But local business owners told the Denver Post problems with the railroad stem from a lack of urgency on the part of the Historical Society to make repairs. Business in Georgetown is down 30 percent on average because of the train's absence, some businesses said. August is a critical time, as tourists make last-minute trips before students head back to school. "It's kind of ruined the end of the season," Gary Haines, former town selectman and owner of the Grizzly Creek Gallery in Georgetown, told the Post. The railroad "is a big attraction. All the merchants rely on it to bring people in," he said. "It also increases the town revenue. With the lack of people coming to Georgetown, it also affects the city's budget."
It is interesting that the businesses want the railroad running but do not want it in the city limits of Georgetown.
I wonder if they realize how @#$%&-like they sound. They want the benefits of the railroad operating but just not in their backyard.
They had people purchase and occupy the old grade that would have allowed the RR all the way into town for a layover and visiting their shops with a short walk.
It almost seems hypocritical to blame the RR when they did not want the RR in town.
I personally like Georgetown, but I can not help feeling that "they made their bed and now they have to live with it". I can not feel sympathy for either the merchants or city for their rejection of the RR.
