According to 1947 profiles the following areas had improved ballast:
3rd Division mainline:
Sargent to Gunnison 8" gravel (1883-84)
Crookton to Bonita 6" gravel (1940)
Gunnison to Iola 8" gravel (1883-84)
cimmaron to Portal 6" gravel (1885)

Crested Butte branch:
Almont to Jacks Cabin 6" gravel (1885)

4th Divison mainline:
Alamosa to near La Jara cinders (1938)
from end of above to past La Jara cinders (1940)
"10.5 miles gravel ballast(in spots) between mp 302 & 340 1925"
-mostly between Sublette & Rock Tunnel, other spots appear to
include some between Sublette & Big Horn, just west of Cresco &
just east of Lobato
"14.77 miles gravel ballast (in spots)1924 bet. mp 345 & 435"
"33.72 miles gravel ballast (in spots)1925&26 bet. mp 354 & 451"
"7.70 miles gravel ballast (in spots)1927 bet. mp 419 & 451"
"19.65 miles gravel ballast (in spots)1929 bet. mp 377 & 432"
-heaviest concentration of "spots" seems to be w. of Dulce to
Tiffany, Ignacio to Florida, & Falfa to Carbon Jct.
