It is still unclear to me during what period of time the telegraph was replaced by telephone for dispatching of trains. Ed would know the answer (I believe he has answered this before via email). I know it is complicated by the fact that the telegraph operators were unionized.

John Norwood states in at least one of his books that the telegraph system was more reliable than the phone system, and it was used during some of the major snow events when the phone system was not functioning.

I will be in Chama next week working on the Chama Depot interpretive display and recreation of the original communications facilities.
If all goes well, I will post daily updates to my blog.
