The only thing that the old trackwork on the C&TS said was "DEFERRED MAINTENANCE".
Yes, I know that it started as the D&RGW's grand plan to let the track sink out of sight before abandonment. That, coupled with new ties and dirt for ballast should have been enough to convince any ICC examiner of the unprofitability of the railroad.
The new track looks good. I'm sure that it instills a sense of pride in the regular C&TS employees to know that the Railroad is actually making a bit of headway against Mother Nature and the D&RGW legacy.
Not only will there be less wear and tear on the rolling stock, there will be less likelyhood of a derailment and the rail ends at each joint won't get pounded by the wheels with every passing.
I say screw the old trackwork and press on with the new. It is positive progress for a line that has seen damn little for the past thirty years.
