I don't really know, but I'm guessing it was mostly for fire protection. I put metal caps over some beams that cantilever out from the front of my house, on the theory it might protect them from dry rot, because replacing them would be a real pain. I got the dry rot anyway, and in talking with a guy who specializes in restoring dryrotted wood he suggested the caps might have made the situation worse by trapping moisture and preventing ventilation and drying.
