Maybe not quite in the scale you had in mind, but Tiny Town in Colorado uses just such a setup for throwing switches on their 15" gauge steam railroad. They carry the Garage door remote control box on the tender and when the train gets close to the switch, the engineer pushes the button and VOILA!, the switch is thrown to whichever direction he wishes to go.
