Thor:
I think what you propose is a terrific idea. Let me add a little "fuel" to your fire to jump start the concept further and bring it front and center to address an immediate need of railroads worldwide. I think I read that you are involved in energy production so perhaps this would be a good place for you to start as well. In reading Earl Knoob’s post regarding what he was burning on his test run of their new mogul reminded me of the impact that higher fuel prices are having on all railways worldwide.
What if you were to start a collaborative effort to optimize the fuel(s) i.e. can a mixture of fuels or blending deliver better performance? Can new technology be applied to fuel atomization and burner design that will increase the efficiency of the fuel oil?
I think if you can develop this into something that can make a practical application then you are going to have the interest of most CMO’s. If you really want to think big maybe some research grants from the oil industry would even be available to help with the costs of R&D.
What a great story it would make if all railroads worldwide could share in cleaner and more efficient locomotives. My 2 ½ cents for you today.
